Ponniyin Selvan Movie Review: The five-volume Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki Krishnamurthy, considered by many to be the greatest work of Tamil literature, has been adapted into a feature-length film. Ponniyin Selvan was a Maniratnam film based on a novel and starring a number of well-known Kollywood actors. The movie was a big success in Tamil, but the Telugu producers did nothing to spread the word.
The film has already been released, so let’s determine if it’s worthwhile to watch, despite the fact that it may have received attention due to the presence of notable actors.
Story
In the first chapter of Ponniyin Selvan, which is set a thousand years in the past, Vandiyathevan (Karthi) carries a message from Crown Prince Aditha Karikalan across Chola nation (Vikram). When vassals and lesser chieftains attempt to launch a civil war, Kundavai (Trisha) intervenes to maintain the political equilibrium of the kingdom. How can the character Arunmozhi Varma safeguard the Chola dynasty and ensure the survival of the Chola Kingdom? Watch the film if you want to understand more about Nandini (Aishwarya Rai).

Movie Verdict
There is little doubt that Bahubali has inspired a large number of films with similarly ambitious concepts. Maniratnam, the master storyteller, has cast a number of well-known performers in his first historical drama. This film has received a great deal of attention, despite the fact that most films of this genre perform poorly at the box office. But I believe it is an authentic Tamil film because it was made by Tamils and starred Tamils.
After the film’s primary characters are introduced, there is little interest in tense drama. However, after Karthi’s introduction of Vandiyathevan, the audience remains intrigued and fascinated until the interval, and the second half of the film is propelled by powerful emotions that keep the viewer engaged. On the other side, Ponniyin Selvan appears to have everything, but we can sense he’s lacking something. I’ve discovered that this is the result of not knowing what occurred in the past.
The film is visually stunning, but non-Tamil speakers may have difficulty following the plot due to the nativity scene and the incomprehensible dubbing. However, if you are familiar with the Chola dynasty, you may like the film.
This is an extremely vital point. For a film like this, when the actor or actress is supposed to portray a historical figure and give the character a face and body, casting is crucial. In addition, Trisha as Kundavi, Aishwarya as Nandhini, and the rest of the cast did an excellent job. Karhi’s portrayal of Vandiyathevan is cool since the character’s humorous body language resembles that of Yuganiki Okkadu. As Arunmozhi Varma, Jayam Ravi has a little role, but his character is so well-written that it makes up for it. Vikram’s performance as Aditha Karikalan is equally noteworthy.
Ponniyiin Selavan is filled with suspense, but director Mani Ratnam, who excels at eliciting dramatic performances from his actors, is unable to transform it into an emotionally engaging film. There is no doubt that Mani Ratnam had nothing to do with the production of this film.
Aside from a few photos employing visual effects, Ponniyin Selvan’s primary technical skill is AR. The remaining cast and crew, including Rehman’s music and soundtrack, Ravi Varman’s outstanding photography, and the rest of the technical personnel, all contribute to the enhancement of the film.
If you know anything about the Chola Kingdom, it’s a lot of fun to watch Ponniyin Selavn on television.
